AND NOW FOR SOMETHING JUST DIFFERENT ENOUGH (Schizachyrium scoparium ‘Twilight Zone’)
Posted by John Friel on Aug 24th 2022
Our latest “little bluestem” marks our tenth offering in this increasingly-popular group. And every one of them is the 2022 Perennial Plant of the Year: For just the second time in that award’s 32-year history, the Perennial Plant Association has bestowed it upon an entire species including all its cultivars.
‘Twilight Zone’ PP27432 lights up the border with a unique, almost glowing, silvery/mauve cast to its mature foliage. As the season progresses, the silver persists even as the mauve tones segue to bright purple.
Its one-of-a-kind foliar color sets it apart, but like all little bluestems, ‘Twilight Zone’ is sturdy, drought-tolerant and self-reliant in the full-sun border. Moreover, this native grass has intrinsic environmental value for pollinators and birds.
Height in flower: 4 ½’. Hardy in Zones 3 – 9.
Get the best of both worlds with ‘Twilight Zone’. It’s eerily easy to grow thanks to slick-transplanting, fast-finishing 38-cell liners from Emerald Coast Growers – your easy choice!
