Availability Alert - Hakonechloa Aureola

Posted by Emerald Coast Growers on Apr 9th 2025

This was the Perennial Plant of the Year in 2009 – one of only four grasses to stand atop that prestigious podium.

Height 18 - 24”

Hardy in Zones 5–9

Most ornamental grasses thrive in full sun. But many gardens have areas the sun just can’t find. Must those places remain grassless? Fortunately, no!

The shaded landscape can also employ and enjoy the graceful form and movement that only grasses bring. The go-to genus: Hakonechloa, a.k.a. Japanese forest grass. The genus gets its name from Hakon, a region in Japan, and chloa, the Greek word for grass.

This sinuous beauty grows as water flows, welling up and cascading down in supple layers of pendant, bamboo-like leaves. It’s happiest in shaded spaces in humus rich, consistently moist soil. Northern growers can get away with brighter plantings, but the warmer the summer, the more protection it appreciates.

Voted Most Popular

Of the four varieties of Hakonechloa we grow, 'Aureola' is the one that gets most of the attention. It's easy to see why.

For most of the growing season, glorious golden highlights illuminate the wooded border.

In fall, the cascading foliage offers a charming color change to include hints of red and pink.
