Intrinsic, Indigenous Bluestem
Posted by Emerald Coast Growers on Aug 14th 2025
Big and little bluestem grasses are both beautiful and beneficial. Once relegated to roles like erosion control and cattle feed, they now enhance even the most high-end landscape designs with vertical structure and intense seasonal color.
These ground-breaking, ecologically valuable grasses come to us from breeder Brent Horvath of Intrinsic Perennials.
Schizachyrium s. 'Little Red Fox' PP36738
Fine-textured blue-green foliage in spring with vibrant red highlights beginning mid-summer.
The foliage takes on deeper red, purple, and eye-catching silver tones with autumn's cool nights.
Maintains a very sturdy habit throughout winter.
Mature height 2 - 2.5'
Schizachyrium s. 'Sandhill' PP36359
An elegant stand-out from others with its wider, flat blades. An impressive garden presence.
It was named for the Sandhill crane, for a similar upright stature and gray-blue coloration.
Fall brings on rich colors of orange and red.
Mature height 4 - 4.5'
These native North American grasses are drought-tolerant, sun-loving, and adaptable to a range of soils. Their deep roots—literal and metaphorical—allow them to access moisture far below the surface, thriving where less resilient plants fail.
Closely related, they were once grouped under the same genus. Both big bluestem (Andropogon) and little bluestem (Schizachyrium) boast striking, color-changing foliage in fall, are hardy to Zone 3, and grow best in full sun with warm nights for a strong finish. Rugged yet refined, they offer both environmental value and ornamental appeal.
Andropogon g. 'Holy Smoke' PP33929
Rigid red flower stems rise to five feet tall over 30" stands of upright/arching foliage.
The hardy, drought-tolerant foliage takes on beautiful hues of reds and purples for a lovely fall display.
Andropogon g. 'Rain Dance' PP26284
