Let It Snow(cap)! Leucanthemum xsuperbum
Posted by John Friel on Nov 3rd 2022
Few perennials are better known or more appreciated than the beautiful and talented Shasta daisy. Its cheerful white-petaled, gold-centered blooms brighten any sunny border.
Varieties span a wide range including single, semi-double and fluffy double forms. Heights range from under a foot to over three feet. One of our favorites (and yours, too, judging by sales) is in the compact category.
L. xs. ‘Snowcap’: This low-growing, uniform gem covers itself with large, lovely white single daisy flowers. Its garden performance is outstanding and, despite its relatively short stems, it’s also a fine cut flower with excellent vase life. Hardy in Zones 5-9.
Height: 14 – 18”.
Culture Notes
In very hot or dry climates, light shade is welcome. Wet feet in winter? Not so much. Be sure to provide good drainage.
Botanical Backstory
First hybridized by pioneering plantsman Luther Burbank in California, the Shasta daisy blends the bloodlines of four species. Three are now known as Leucanthemum and one as Nipponanthemum, but when he crossed them in the 1890s, naming the result for nearby snow-covered Mount Shasta, all were considered Chrysanthemum
