Newsworthy Native ~ Bouteloua gracilis

Newsworthy Native ~ Bouteloua gracilis

Posted by Emerald Coast Growers on Aug 30th 2024

Bouteloua is one of the most sought-after grasses to hit the market in years. This versatile native is short in stature but ranks high on the Most Wanted list of discerning growers and landscapers. Hot new breeding fuels a budding increase in popularity.

Check out the two fast-finishing, ready-to-ship varieties featured below. We offer both in 38 and 50-cell trays. And don't miss the straight species in our lineup or the zippy new hybrid we've introduced for 2025.

Bouteloua g. 'Blonde Ambition' PP22048

Heavy stands of chartreuse flowers mature quickly to fun blonde "eyelash" seedheads, held at a perky, flirting angle. Clumps of fine blue-green foliage complete the picture.

No wonder it's a Plant Select® winner!

Bouteloua g. 'Honeycomb' PP33101

Waving in the breeze, color-changing honey-hued seedheads look like lush eyelash-like pennants floating high above strong, slender upright stems.

The plant habit is full and dense, with less blade die-back than in other varieties.

From Intrinsic Perennial Gardens.

Compact North American natives, Bouteloua top out at two and a half feet or shorter. Landscape masses, retail containers, and sunny home gardens are all prime locations for these sturdy, summer-blooming plants. Attractive seedheads are held firmly in place for the added value of winter interest.

Deemed hardy for Zones 3-10, these beauties are hardy almost everywhere. The mature plants are exceptionally drought-tolerant adding appeal for the water-wise.

2025 Fresh Picks

A petite new introduction from David Salman, Bouteloua xZig Zag™ PPAF.

Summer brings tan, striped eye-brow-like flowers that ripen to white. This hybrid blooms profusely but doesn't stray, as flowers are sterile. The attractive seedheads hold nicely in place for winter interest.

Mature height 15"-18"
