Ravishing Ruby Red Racemes- Lobelia cardinalis
Posted by Emerald Coast Growers on Apr 28th 2023
Native plants are an exciting market. Consumer interest is at an all-time high, and that's a good thing- for the environment, for pollinators and, for your bottom line.
Lobelia cardinalis is named for its brilliant, true red racemes on lofty 4' tall, erect spikes, opening in sequence from bottom to top. Matching beauty with purpose, the deep red color is a natural attractant for pollinators. Bees and butterflies are sure to visit, but the most beneficial partnership is shared with hummingbirds.
This native perennial is as happy as a kid with muddy toes when planted in moist landscape spaces, whether sun or shade dominates. Wet feet? No problem!
Hardy for Zones 3-9.
The later bloom cycle of Lobelia cardinalis aligns perfectly with the migration of the ruby-throated hummingbird, serving up necessary late season energy for their journey through the Americas south for winter rest.
Winner of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society.
Audubon's Bird-Friendly Native Plant of the Year 2016.
