Sesleria caerulea - Cool, With a Twist.

Posted by Emerald Coast Growers on May 3rd 2024

"Blue moor grass" is about as cool as cool-season grasses get. It's neat, dense tufts seldom grow more than a foot tall. Each clump is made up of slender blades, glaucous blue-green on top, and deep green below. A slight twist to each blade shows both colors at once for a shimmering two-tone appearance.

In late spring/early summer, the inflorescence appears as small, dark purple panicles that mature to silvery green. Sesleria is native to Scandinavian countries, so it’s a pretty safe bet it’ll handle your winters.

Culture Notes

Cool-season grasses put on most of their growth in spring and fall, not doing much in summer except sitting pretty. Keep them irrigated, but don’t expect much action while the heat is on. They’ll perk up again when the temperatures moderate.

Soil/irrigation: Easy to grow in average moisture, well-drained media.

Location: Full sun.

Size: 8"-12”

Hardiness: USDA Zones 4 – 7.

This compact grower needs little care once established. It makes a good specimen for small plantings, or a dependable ground cover when massed on 12” to 18” centers in larger spaces. It’s even tough enough for use on green roofs that get some moisture.
