Sporobolus heterolepsis - A Plant of Merit
Posted by Emerald Coast Growers on Aug 21st 2025
The breeze can't resist gliding gracefully through the fine, hair-like blades of Sporobolus, sending wafts of fragrance to greet passersby. Don't let the common name, prairie dropseed<, hit the wrong note. This lovely, self-sufficient native grass is a clump-former, not a vigorous spreader.
Declared a “Plant of Merit” by Missouri Botanical Garden for “outstanding quality and dependable performance,” Sporobolus is widely considered to be among the most attractive native prairie grasses.
In late summer, airy pink-tan flower panicles rise above the foliage, releasing a surprising scent reminiscent of coriander, or some say warm popcorn. Delightful! Native, beautiful and fragrant - a winning combination.
Four Season Beauty
From fresh green blades in spring to golden fall color and creamy winter tones, Sporobolus offers lasting interest year-round.
It’s drought-tolerant, low-maintenance, and ideal for everything from prairie restorations to modern designs.
