Looking to add some stellar selections to your perennial lineup? You’re in the right place. These proven all-stars always come shining through.
Echinacea purpurea Ruby Star
A superior, classic, large-flowered selection. Carmine-red petals remain horizontal, not reflexed, for a more colorful show than the straight species. “Purple coneflower” is beloved by birds, bees and butterflies. Goldfinches especially love to perch and dine on the spiky central seed cones after the petals drop.
Height: 3 – 4’
Hardy in USDA Zones 3 - 9
Lobelia xspeciosa Starship™ series
These vigorous hybrids form sturdy, bushy columns. Adaptable to a wide range of light levels, all the way up to full sun with adequate moisture. Starship™ Blue launches fleets of purple/blue flowers, summer into autumn, over green foliage. Starship™ Burgundy is a fine bedfellow, with wine-red blooms over bronze foliage.
Height: 24”
Hardy in USDA Zones 6 – 10
The Game of the Name
● A flock of goldfinches is called a charm.
● Echinacea gets its name from a hedgehog relative.
● The genus name Lobelia has nothing to do with lobes. Rather, it honors Matthias de L’Obel, French physician and botanist of the late 16th/early 17th centuries.
