Survival of the Fittest: Ferns

Survival of the Fittest: Ferns

Posted by Emerald Coast Growers on May 1st 2025

From the dawn of time, ferns have seen it all. Many of our best sellers graced the world's gardens over a century ago. Before that, their foliar ancestors shared the planet with really big reptiles during the Jurassic era, a likely inspiration for the newest cultivar to catch our attention.

Both Dryopteris varieties shown grow to a mature height of 18-24" and are hardy for Zones 5-9. We've included a look at the unique foliage of Fortune's cold hardy holly ferns and everyone's favorite variegated option, Japanese painted ferns.

Let's explore more.

Dryopteris erythrosa

(Autumn fern)

New fronds emerge warm coppery-bronze and mature to bright green. Robust, reliable, and really easy to grow.

Dryopteris w. Jurassic Gold PP32735

New spring growth is a striking golden orange hue. As the fronds mature, they evolve to a bright golden yellow and green.

A staple for shaded and partly shady spaces, ferns offer softening, unifying textures for the landscape. These perennial offerings are pleasantly deceptive: Their timeless beauty disguises their rugged, long-lived, low-maintenance nature.

Cyrtomium fortunei

(Fortune's cold hardy holly fern)

A fast-growing fern tolerant of cold weather and hardy to Zone 10. Upright habit with durable glossy green leaflets.

Mature height 1-2.5'

Zones 5-10

Athyrium niponicum 'Metallicum'

(Japanese painted fern)

Gray-green foliage with burgundy ribs and silver highlights on reddish stems.

Mature height 12-18"

Zones 3-9
