The A-Team Benchwarmer (Heuchera Melting Fire)
Posted by John Friel on Aug 5th 2021
Nothing heats up your Heuchera selection like 'Melting Fire'. Smoldering red foliage makes it a hot property -- on the bench and in the border.
Seed production means it’s an economical option compared to pricier vegetative propagated varieties. But great breeding means it’s just as gorgeous. Finally, tricky germination means you won’t find it just anywhere. But we’ve cracked that code, so you’ll find ‘Melting Fire’ on our Availability.
‘Melting Fire’ has smoldering maroon leaves with strongly curled edges. New foliage emerges bright red, creating crackling highlights. It’s happiest in full sun or part shade. Height: 15-18”. Hardy in USDA Zones 4 – 9.
The Game of the Name
You’ll usually hear Heuchera pronounced HYOO-ker-uh, although it really should be HOY-ker-uh. The genus was named in honor of Johann Heinrich von Heucher, who pronounced his surname HOY-ker. But if you want people to know what you’re talking about, go with HYOO-ker-uh. The “right” way sounds like a cat with a hairball.
