Warm Season Grass - Pennisetum alopecuroides

Posted by Emerald Coast Growers on Sep 4th 2025

Pennisetum alopecuroides (commonly known as fountain grass) thrives in late summer and early fall due to the long daylight hours and warm temperatures, which stimulate active growth and fuller foliage.

A staple among cold-hardy fountain grasses. Narrow green leaves grow in soft, arching mounds. Green seed heads become large, golden brown foxtails in fall.

Tips for Overwintering Warm-Season Grasses

To set your grasses up for success, we recommend applying a fungicide drench before dormancy.

In a Greenhouse:

  • Maintain temperatures above 23°F.
  • Remove dead foliage to prevent disease.
  • Increase heat and light in February to wake plants up gently.

Overwintering Outdoors:

  • Clear away dead debris to reduce excess moisture and rot.
  • Minimize freeze/thaw cycles as much as possible.
  • Cover pots and store them in a cool, dry spot for protection.

Come spring, when sunny days get longer and warmer, your overwintered pots will rise and shine. Trim new foliage lightly to encourage lush growth. If overwintered outdoors, uncover and space pots once the danger of hard frost has passed.

These container-friendly compacts are exceptionally noteworthy for their cold tolerance and popularity.
