Warm Season Grasses ~ Pennisetum alopecuroides

Posted by Emerald Coast Growers on Aug 14th 2024

Mother Nature provides optimum outdoor conditions for bulking fountain grasses in late summer and fall. Pennisetum alopecuroides is light-sensitive and needs these long, warm days to promote active growth.

Tips for Overwintering Warm Season Grasses

We recommend a fungicide drench before dormancy.

In a greenhouse:

  1. Keep temps above 23F.
  2. Remove dead foliage.
  3. Turn up the heat and add light in February.

Overwintering outside:

  1. Clean up dead debris to mitigate moisture issues.
  2. Keep the plants from freezing/thawing cycles as possible.
  3. Cover pots and keep them in a cool, dry location.

Next spring when long, warm and sunny days return, those overwintered pots will rise and shine. When this new foliage emerges, trim it lightly to encourage growth. If pots are outdoors, uncover or move and space pots, but be prepared to protect them from damaging frosts and hard freezes. Add your spring protocols and you're ready to rock with gorgeous gallons.

These container-friendly compacts are exceptionally noteworthy for their cold tolerance and popularity.
