Pantone Color of the Year 2022

The color gurus at Pantone have anointed “Very Peri” as THE color for 2022. In their trademark breathless prose, Pantone describes Very Peri as a “red violet infused blue hue” that inspires “carefree confidence” and “bold curiosity.” It’s so cool, it’s “a symbol of the global zeitgeist.” Wow!

At ECG, we pay attention to this annual decision. Why? Because your customers do.

Confidently, curiously or unconsciously, home gardeners will see, and buy, Veri Peri even if they’ve never heard of the Color of the Year. Why? Because it’s already everywhere, in clothing, furniture and outdoor accessories. Offer them flowers that play well with the COTY! You can make it easy with:

COLOR MATCHES

Veronica peduncularis ‘Georgia Blue’

This ground-hugger forms dense mats of small round leaves, hidden by nifty sky-blue flowers in spring. Foliage emerges red, turns rich green in summer and bronze in fall. Don’t let the name fool you, it’s named for Eurasian Georgia, not Dixie.

Height: 4 – 6”.

Hardy in Zones 4 – 8.

 Veronica Royal Candles PP18932

Cheerful spikes of rich violet blue flower from late spring well into midsummer. Medium height and compact form make terrific looking pots at retail.

Height: 15 – 18”.

Hardy in Zones 4 – 8.

COLOR COMPLEMENTS

Across the color wheel from Very Peri’s saturated purple/blue you’ll find its red, yellow and orange wingmen. That range includes too many to list here, but you’ll find plenty in one long-blooming native genus, known by the un-charming common name “Tickseed.”

Coreopsis auriculata ‘Nana’

This underappreciated little native deserves a place in any sunny/partly shaded border. Known as “mouse-eared tickseed” due to its cute lobed leaves.

Height: 6 - 9”.

Hardy in Zones 3 – 10.

Coreopsis ‘Jethro Tull’ PP18789

This one rocks! You’ll love the tubular “fluted” golden petals that inspired its name. Flowers from spring through summer. An outstanding selection from Itsaul Plants.

Height: 12 – 18”.

Hardy in Zones 5 – 9.
