Evening Blooms Early ~ Achillea Desert Eve™ series

Evening Blooms Early ~ Achillea Desert Eve™ series

Posted by John Friel on Mar 23rd 2022

Those who live in actual deserts know: Evening is that delightful time you wait for all day, biding your time until the heat of the day wanes and the colors of the sky grow deep and mellow.

Desert Eve varieties are bred for excellent vigor, compact growth and big flower heads, up to 4” across. They’re perfect for landscape, container or vase. Foliage is ferny and fragrant.

Achillea Desert Eve  ‘Deep Rose’

Big umbels of deep rose-pink florets.

Achillea Desert Eve Red Improved PP22333

Rich red blooms with gold stamens.

Achillea Desert Eve ‘Terracotta’

An unusual earthy hue, described by some as “toasty orange.”

Achillea Desert Eve Yellow PP22369

Bright lemon-yellow combines nicely with other colors.

 Culture Notes

Achillea is known as a long-day obligate perennial. Vernalization is not required to flower Desert Eve™ varieties. The series is adaptable to a wide range of soils, tolerates humidity better than older types, and ranks among the earliest-blooming “yarrows” you can grow! They thrive in full sun to part shade. All varieties stand 12 – 18” tall and are hardy in Zones 4 – 9.

The Game of the Name

Achillea is named for Achilles, hero of the Trojan war and the main character in Homer’s Iliad. According to Greek mythology, he was the son of Peleus, a king of ancient Thessaly, and Thetis, a sea nymph.
