HUG A GROUND-HUGGER: Part 2 How low can you go?
Posted by John Friel on Jan 13th 2021
When you hear the word “groundcover,” what comes to mind? After “Ho-hum,” probably a few too-familiar genera, right?
It doesn’t have to be that way. There are strikingly different, even fascinating, perennials that serve multiple groundcover functions – erosion control, border edging, container “spiller” -- without putting you to sleep. Low-growing doesn’t have to mean low margin.
Here’s the lowdown on some short stuff we think highly of.
This is one of the most striking low-growing Sedum varieties we offer. ‘Coral Reef forms dense mats of deep green fleshy leaves that mature to coppery bronze in full sun. An outstanding form for border or container. Looks great in pots at retail. Hardy in Zones 6 – 10. Height 3 -- 6”. Starry yellow flowers in mid-late summer.
Sedum Sunsparkler® ‘Lime Zinger’
Here’s a cutie. Succulent lime-green leaves have a nifty red picotee edge. The habit is reminiscent of the more familiar S. sieboldii, but tighter and more compact. Forms tight attractive 4” clumps, with rose – pink flowers rising 6” in summer. Hardy in Zones 4 – 9.
