Just When You Think You’ve Seen It All...Pennisetum ‘Yellow Ribbons’
Posted by John Friel on Jul 28th 2021
The genus known as “Fountain grass” is large and multifaceted. We grow over two dozen varieties, covering a wide spectrum of looks, hues and uses.
Our Pennisetum offerings range from sturdy little cuties less than a foot tall, up to soaring six-footers. Most are hardy, but some of our most popular cultivars are annuals.
With so much variety, you’d think we had all the bases covered. But the plant breeders of the world always have something unexpected up their sleeves.

Our most recent addition:P. alopecuroides ‘Yellow Ribbons’(PP31362), bred and selected by Brent Horvath of Intrinsic Perennial Gardens. Brent has introduced many fine new plants to the industry, and we think this is some of his best work.
‘Yellow Ribbons’ forms graceful clumps of slender golden foliage that turns chartreuse/yellow late in the season. Topped with tan seed heads late in the season, it glows in the sunny border. A great foil for perennials with darker foliage, it stands 2’ tall and is hardy in Zones 5 – 9.
