Mmmmm… What’s That Smell Again? It’s lavender, of course! Chapter III

Yes, it’s Lavandula, all right. Nothing else can match the fresh, clean fragrance of this legendary herb. We know that fragrance well, since we grow 12 varieties in several species. Let’s look at more of them, shall we?

Earlier, we examined L. angustifolia, a.k.a. English lavender, and L. stoechas, a.k.a. Spanish lavender.

This time, let’s take a look at a hybrid: L. intermedia , a.k.a. Lavandin.

This cross combines the assets of two species: L. angustifolia and L. latifolia, a.k.a. Portuguese lavender.

L. xi. Phenomenal PP24193

This Pennsylvania discovery lives up to its name with robust growth, heavy bloom and great humidity tolerance. Long lavender-purple spikes rise above vigorous mounds of healthy silvery foliage.

Height: 24 – 32”.

Hardy in Zones 5 – 8.

L. xi. ‘Provence’

Growers in humid areas, where many lavenders suffer, have long considered this their “go-to” variety. It’s named for a region of France where it’s grown in large quantities for the fragrance/perfume industry. The light purple blooms and the rich green foliage are both strongly aromatic.

Height: 2 – 3’.

Hardy in Zones 5 – 10.

Culture Notes

This interspecific hybrid is the most moisture-tolerant of all Lavandula. Nonetheless, like all the others, it benefits from good sharp drainage, especially in winter.

Fun Factoids

●angustifolia is Latin for “narrow leaved,” and latifolia = “wide-leaved.”

● “A.k.a.” is short for “also known as,” and it’s not just for Wanted posters. It’s a convenient shorthand for plants that have acquired multiple monikers over the years.

● That marvelous clean, fresh scent gave the genus its name. Lavender is from lavare, Latin for “to wash.” It’s been used for that purpose for millennia.
