Salvia nemorosa May Night (‘Mainacht’) Flashback!

Posted by John Friel on Oct 6th 2022

Back in 1997, Emerald Coast Growers was just six years old. Bill Clinton was in the White House. A new Honda Civic cost $10,000. The Marlins beat the Indians in the World Series, and the Packers whupped the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI.

But the big news that year? The Perennial Plant Association chose Salvia May Night as its Perennial Plant of the Year. All other phenomena were just fighting for silver.

May Night is a classic best-seller thanks to its long-lasting violet-purple flower spikes in late spring/early summer. It loves to flower so much, it demands extra attention in propagation to get it to root and branch – an issue for propagators, not for growers or gardeners.

Height: 18 – 24”.

Hardy from USDA Zone 8 all the way down to 3!

The Game of the Name

The proper name ‘Mainacht’ is German for “May night,” a reference to the deep evening-sky-blue flowers and their season of bloom. The International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP) says that variety and cultivar names can appear between single quotes only in the language in which they were registered with the proper registering authority.

Cultivate a classic headliner. Get Salvia May Night for a whole lot less than a new Honda. It comes in beefy 50-cell liners from Emerald Coast Growers – your easy choice!
