The Game of the Name
Gaillardia is one of many American native genera with European names. This one honors Antoine Rene’ Gaillard de Charentonneau, 18th-Century French magistrate and amateur botanist. Plant explorers in the French colonies sent him plants and seeds, which he shared with fellow scientists and enthusiasts.
And if you think his name is a tongue-twister, hah! It is but child’s play compared to Auguste Denis Fougeroux de Bondaroy, the plant physiologist who named the genusin Antoine’s honor in 1788.
