You Can't Lose This Battle of the Blues (Festuca)

You Can't Lose This Battle of the Blues (Festuca)

Posted by John Friel on May 11th 2021

We grow four varieties of blue Festuca, and one that’s rich dark green. The blue ones all have similarities, but also a key distinguishing attribute, subtle or obvious.

Each has its fans who claim their favorite is the best. The Blues, after all, is (are?) a very personal thing.

Festuca glauca Beyond Blue(‘Casca 11’) PP23307 The Great Beyond!

This Dutch intro is a direct descendent of ‘Elijah Blue’. Years of patient selecting yielded this compact, summer stable form, famous on both sides of the Atlantic. And it inspired what has to be the wackiest video ever made about a grass: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEp7WgaBQek

F. g. ‘Boulder Blue’: Rock on!

Selected in Colorado more than a quarter century ago, ‘Boulder Blue’ boasts intensely blue tufts of wiry, hair like foliage. It’s happy in harsh, arid environments.

This hybrid hails from Intrinsic Perennial Farm in Illinois, famous for selections of sedum and native grasses. One of our taller offerings, ‘Cool as Ice’, earns its name with excellent heat tolerance and summer color retention.

Height 12 – 18” Hardy in Zones 4 - 8

F. g. ‘Elijah Blue: Prophets, Profits & Pop Stars

Elijah was a famous prophet. Elijah Blue Allman is a semi-famous guitarist whose mega-famous mom sang “I got you, babe.” A famous New York nursery located on Elijah Lane introduced Festuca ‘Elijah Blue’, consistently among our top sellers.

A New Hue? Who Knew!

F. sp. Eilers BeautyDidn’t Get the Dress Code Memo

Glaucous blue is the signature hue of Festuca. Any other color looks almost out of place, but make room for this one’s fine-textured, matte-green tufts, tan seedheads and red-tinged stems. It can handle tough conditions, even dry shade.
