GARDENS OF THE GODS Dianthus

GARDENS OF THE GODS Dianthus

Posted by John Friel on Nov 25th 2020

Many a gardener treasures their earthly creation as a little piece of heaven, and we wouldn’t dream of arguing with them. Why not take things a step farther and offer them some of our favorite “heavenly” cultivars?

Dianthus “Pinks”

This Greek-derived genus name literally means “Divine flower” or “Flower of Zeus.” It’s a mashup of “Di,” deity, and “anthos,” flower.

We don’t know exactly what heavenly members of the carnation clan the ancient Greeks were admiring, but we’re pretty confident it wasn’t any more divine than the modern forms you can offer your customers from our liners. For example:

D. xbarbatus Rockin’ Red

The gods must be crazy about this one. Rich red flowers sport fringed edges and paler eye zones. Flowers in spring, with substantial rebloom in summer and fall.

Height: 18 – 24”. Hardy in Zones 5 – 8.

Vivid Bright Light PP28239 and Vivid Cherry Charm PP30871

The Vivid™ series feature long-blooming, brightly color flowers on strong stems. These interspecific hybrids bring the Wow! factor to borders and containers alike.

Short and compact (under 8”!). Hardy in Zones 5 – 9.

Vivid™ Cherry Charm PP30871

Vivid™ Bright Light PP28239

Bring a little heaven down to earth. Slip some celestial sensations into your perennial offering. They come in liners from Emerald Coast Growers – the easy choice!
