Hear ye! Hear ye! ROYAL COLLECTION PENNISETUM

Posted by John Friel on Dec 11th 2020

From the formal grounds of Tudor mansions to the simplest summer cottage, every garden welcomes the Royal touch. They’re a dramatic focal point as individual specimens, or an eye-popping, traffic-stopping show when planted in masses.

They’re also terrific as the “thriller” in large containers. Keyword: “large!”

Royal Collection Pennisetum varieties thrive on warm weather and full sun. Nobly bred, these bold, dark beauties fill your big-ticket big containers with remarkable style and speed. Hardy in Zones 7 – 11, they only flower in areas that never freeze. It’s all about that gorgeous dark, darker, darkest foliage!

Here’s how to grow our Royal Collection grasses: Plant them, and stand back!

BACK OF THE BORDER: 6’ and up

‘Prince’PP18509 One of the originals. Rich purple leaves won’t fade.

Majestic PP25518 Long, broad leaves of rich purple-red flow gracefully.

Noble PPAF Dark and dense, tall and broad of blade and habit.

 MIDRANGE: 4 – 5’

Princess Caroline PP21464 Clean bright purple foliage. Very sturdy.

First Knight PP25515 None shall pass! The broadest, blackest blades in the realm, with gleaming red midribs.

Royal Lady PP25514 New green growth darkens to maroon, then royal purple.

FRONT ROW: 3 – 4’

‘Princess’PP17728 Like ‘Prince’ but more ladylike in stature.

Regal PrincessPP25517 Newer breeding brings improved color and disease resistance.

Fun Fact: these big brawny beauties are bred by Dr. Wayne Hanna, UGA Emeritus, whose portfolio features turf grasses for athletic fields and golf courses. So some of his progeny tower overhead while others calmly bear up underfoot. We can’t think of any more extreme extremes in the same plant category. Can you?
